What is personal style?
How do you create a personal style, you ask? Well, AJW lovelies, when you think of developing an individual style, you’ve got to look internally. It would be best to create an everyday wardrobe rather than invariably buying clothes for the occasion. Creating your everyday style for different moods is the goal, and agenda here.
How do we create it? And what is “IT”?
Well, as mentioned, it primarily starts internally. We’ve got to look at our everyday activities and determine what’s comfortable for this occasion and the next.
Now, in creating a personal style, simplicity is invaluable, more than one can easily realize. More often than not, our brains push us to over-complicate and over-compensate everything. Doubtless, it’s naturally human to desire some sort of challenge. How, then, do we beat this in fashion? WE SIMPLY KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Too Many Colors
Without a doubt, colors play a big role in creating personal style, particularly for a girl who always wants everything she sees on Ssense and AJW Archives. To build and develop a personal style, you have to pick specific colors, especially in the beginning when choosing and creating your own style. You should be able to determine what colors look good for a specific activity. You should, as well, be able to switch the colors by season, or have a rotation of colors you use or look for in specific period. Additionally, it is paramount to recognize the importance and relevance of different colors for different activities to keep your style pleasurable. In all you do, choose specific colors!
3 Color Theory
Now, let’s deduce a theory together, because I strongly feel positive about it.
Certainly, if one wears 3 unique and different colors in rotation for specific events or activities, a sense of personal style will begin to develop. For example, if one has their favorite black pants but wants to brush away the feeling that she wears them quite regularly, it is necessary and logical to put them in rotation. I promise you it will take the edge off and create a fresh feel for the pants every occasion.
BTW - this also applies to fabrics, like, for instance, denim, silk, and linen for the summer; one could swap or switch them for leather, wool, and fur for the winter. Amazing, isn’t it!
Ex.) Work = Black, Navy blue, White
Doubtless, choosing your everyday wear can get grossly exhausting. However, if you practice and apply the “3 color theory” principle, you will always have an item to match and feel greater satisfaction. You will always enjoy purchasing different versions of an outfit in three different colors. Theoretically, this may sound boring and repetitive. Over time, however, this method will work to curate your very own unique style. Let’s assume, for instance, that my everyday activity is the gym. My colors of choice would be black, dark red, or purple. The third color, purple, is based on personal preference because it could have variations such as navy blue or tannish/nude. This can be most appropriate, especially when you are the type of person who prefers that “IT’ look at all times.
Building
This is for everyday people. Irrespective of identity, you can always give runway. When one builds their signature style, it will have the same effect as a signature scent that appeals to others and wins their approval. One can be recognized for only wearing black because that is what satisfies them. Similarly, one can be recognized for wearing corduroy pants and cuffing the ends of them because they feel like showing off their socks. Maybe one will have their favorite denim and cover it with their favorite band pins. All of these constitute signatures of personal style because they have everything to do with what individuals like. You think people who wear animal ears in public (not on holidays) care about public opinion? By no means! They understand it’s a statement that draws attention no matter what, and people will curiously look at them because they are illustrating their true selves in a unique and stylish way.
Building personal style thus involves having a set of dependable, reliable, and personally styled clothes. "Yes, I can always count on these jeans. They make my ass look great and go with everything, “one would conclude. Perhaps, one will choose to wear their favorite jeans with a belt or pair it with heels. This is driven by personal relationships and experience with them. Crazy as it may sound, it is worth it because it is just like growing relationships with people, work, or your craft; in the same manner, one can do the same with clothes and accessories. That’s why you will often hear someone say, ‘That’s my favorite sweater because ABC happened when I wore it,” or “These are my go to shoes because they are super cute plus I can walk 10 blocks in them”. It’s all about dependability and value when building a personal style.
How do you perfect your everyday wardrobe?
To perfect everyday life, one can use accessories for pop colors and accents. Just like beautifying and decorating a house, you have to dress the outfit up! Just like how we have accent walls and decorative coffee tables; you have fingers you can drape with gold and white gold rings, or maybe you’re a colorful ceramic jewel ring type. Just like a house has a characteristic, so will your style, if you focus on it, it will cultivate itself.
Now that you have established your likes and dislikes, if your face looks best in baseball caps or bucket hats, it’s up to you. As long as you are happy, we are even happier for you. That’s how personal style develops and works. I may hate the pants you wear, but the way your confidence radiates when you wear them, could influence me to try them.
